چکیده

We propose a new electrode configuration, called diamond-shape in-plane switching, to lower the operation voltage of polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) displays (BPLCDs). The electrode structure is modified from conventional protruded IPS, where the strip protrusion is changed to diamond shape. By optimising the electrode gap and diamond length, we are able to obtain peak transmittance over 75% at 15 V. It enables single thin-film transistor (TFT) driving, and more importantly, this is based on an industrially proven BPLC material. That means good long-term stability, adequate TFT charging time for high-resolution displays and sub-millisecond response time and acceptable voltage-holding ratio for field sequential displays can be achieved simultaneously. Our device design helps accelerate the emergence of the long-awaited BPLCDs. ARTICLE HISTORY Received 6 November 2016 Accepted 20 November 2016

An Ultra-low Voltage Blue Phase LCD for Mobile Applications

We report an ultra-low voltage (<5V) two-domain blue phase liquid crystal display (BPLCD) for mobile applications. Compared to fringe field switching, our BPLCD shows superior performance in response time, integrated transmittance, viewing angle, and color shift. It also enables color sequential display with tripled optical efficiency and resolution density. Author

Transflective display using a polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal.

A wide view, submillisecond response, and single-cell-gap transflective display using a blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) is proposed. To balance the optical phase retardation between transmissive (T) and reflective (R) regions, in-plane protrusion electrodes are formed with different gaps in the two regions. This display exhibits reasonably high optical efficiency and well matched voltage depen...

Wall-shaped electrodes for reducing the operation voltage of polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal displays

Polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal displays based on the Kerr effect are emerging due to their submillisecond response time, wide view and simple fabrication process. However, the conventional in-plane switching device exhibits a relatively high operating voltage because the electric fields are restricted in the vicinity of the electrode surface. To overcome this technical barrier, we...

Low Voltage Polymer-stabilized Blue Phase with Red-shifted Bragg Reflection

We demonstrated a low voltage polymer-stabilized blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) by red-shifting the Bragg reflection to the visible region. To retain high contrast ratio, the BPLC is sandwiched between two crossed circular polarizers. The driving voltage is reduced by 35% compared to that of a transparent BPLC, while keeping submillisecond response time. The proposed approach would accelerate...

Blue phase liquid crystal: strategies for phase stabilization and device development

The blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) is a highly ordered liquid crystal (LC) phase found very close to the LC-isotropic transition. The BPLC has demonstrated potential in next-generation display and photonic technology due to its exceptional properties such as sub-millisecond response time and wide viewing angle. However, BPLC is stable in a very small temperature range (0.5-1 °C) and its drivi...
